School in a Bag – Kenya

Towards the end of 2022, the team at Blake got together with School in a Bag for a bag packing day at our head office in Yeovil, in support of two causes. One of the causes we supported was a primary school in Kenya.

Here at Blake we do all we can to help those in need. As part of our Giving Hope through Education Program the Blake Foundation partners with the wonderful School in a Bag charity, we are thrilled to be making a difference to the lives of poor, orphan, vulnerable and disaster affected children throughout the world with the ingenious solution of a SchoolBag.

Containing all the stationery, learning resources and eating utensils needed to attend school and receive an education, we believe that we are giving these children what could be their passport out of a life of hardship and poverty.

The SchoolBags in our most recent donation were given to children who attend Bushbells Primary School in Watamu, Kenya. The school was funded and built by the profits generated from a social enterprise initiative that employs local Kenyans to make clothing from tradition Kiely material.

“Our Bushbells journey began in 2009 as a modest attempt to support the community and people we care about as a third-generation East African mother and daughter team. When Sammy was widowed with three children to support, we wanted to help him find more work. So, we harnessed his expertise as a tailor and took inspiration from the colourful Kenyan coast to sell kikoy clothing to our UK family and friends. Demand exceeded all expectations and 'Bushbells' was born. We completed our first namesake school - Bushbells - in 2015, and started building our second, and sister school, Bluebells, in 2016. Today, profits from all our sales fund our ongoing educational projects and ensures a secure livelihood for our small and magnificent team of tailors and beadworker.”
