BLAKE FURTHERING SUPPORT TO THE GAMBIA

We are very excited that another container of donations will soon be on it’s way out to The Gambia. Continuing work with one of our great partners School in a Bag, and contacts Ginger and Sol, founders of Skoolz 4 Kids, we are delighted to be able to support the children in The Gambia.

At Blake, we are committed to making a difference to the world we live in. Not only market leaders in the world of envelopes and postal packaging, we are about so much more. Education, and indeed, literacy, is one cause particularly close to our hearts, as closely linked with letter writing and communication. Throughout the word, millions of children are suffering lives of poverty, neglect and hardship – something that is largely unrecognised, and so they continue to be denied the necessities of life such as a good education. Blake are passionate about having an impact on the lives of these children and providing a solution to meet their need.

As such we felt that working with School in a Bag would help us give the opportunity to help children of The Gambia have access to education, which currently so many unfortunately do not. The overall literacy rate is only 55%, and thousands of children aren’t attending school because their families simply can’t afford to pay school fees. Despite the fact that, in 1998, President Jammeh ordered the termination of fees for the first six years of schooling in 1998, this has sadly been almost impossible to implement due to a dire lack of resources and educational infrastructure. Schools are in desperate need of the essential learning equipment, and many children are still starved of an education.

Our partners at School in a Bag our sending a container full of school furniture, alongside the clothing, in order to provide a better learning environment. Due to the nature of packing furniture into the container meant that there was space under desks and tables that were able to be utilised for much needed clothing and shoes. From our previous visit we are well aware that clothing and footwear is sorely needed. As such in the space of a couple weeks we were able to collect over 75 boxes of clothing and footwear, organise these by size, and pack them ready for the container.
